In the seventeenth century Galileo Galilei studied the regularity of the motion of the pendulum. Later, in 1936, was Christiaan Huygens in exploiting this movement area creating an attractive furniture that even today we find in the homes of fans of antiques: the grandfather clock. Over time, however, it is possible that the pendulum will ruin and wear. For this reason it is appropriate to carry out a proper restoration. Through the description of some important guidelines, we will explain how to restore this precious furniture.
Be sure to have on hand:
- Products to remove the wax
- Paint removers
- Wool scouring pads
- Wax or varnish
It is important to first release the pendulum swinging to avoid breaking it. Then you will have to remove the mechanical part to restore the wood and make it like new. To help you find external plates that you should take care to gently to avoid bending the levers of the watch. Now lubricate the mechanical part and leave it aside.
Now it is necessary to determine whether the presence of parasites feeding on wood, the ruin. Perform a specific treatment against these pests whose larvae may damage your Watch. Use a brush to apply the product directly on the larvae or help with direct injections into the tunnels dug by the insects, to prevent any deposition of eggs.
After you remove the parasites from the wood you will need to restore the surface of your watch; It is important to distinguish between a wooden clock waxed or painted wood. In the first case, you used a product that takes away the wax. The product is applied with a brush or cloth. Then gently wipe with a thin iron wool pad (do not use tampons for polishing!). Finally, wipe with a cloth and do not rinse, because water could cause swelling the wood, damaging not only its appearance but also its structure. Pickling has highlighted hitherto covered stains from wax. Use a whitening product (for use with a Relativizing) where the stain has disappeared with the wax. Try to get a uniform color throughout. Passed, then a layer of paste wax, insisting particularly on the stains. A tincture or a colored wax (with the help of a thin iron pad to make it penetrate better into the wood) will serve to mask the light spots.
If the wood is painted, you remove the paint with the help of gloves and a paint stripper that melt, forming bubbles. At this point you will have to delete the paint with a trowel for larger parties and define the stripping with a steel wool to get the residue. Then you can pass a rag with rubbing alcohol to clean. Once dried the area, you can repaint.
At this point you will have the pendulum restored, but you have to reassemble it taking care to act very gently to avoid damaging the hands and whatever tools necessary to operate the clock. Once reassembled you will again place your clock in your living room giving an air of ancient grace room entrance.
- Products for maintenance and restoration are not chosen at random, but with care and taking into account the conditions of the pendulum and the type of finish it has received.
